- On June 3, 2025, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a health alert for 1-pound packages of Organic Rancher ground beef distributed nationwide through Whole Foods Market locations.
- The alert was issued after NPC Processing Inc. Informed authorities that beef produced on May 22 and 23 was found to be contaminated with E. Coli O157:H7, a dangerous type of bacteria present in the products.
- The affected 85% lean, 15% fat packages were vacuum-packed, labeled with 'Use or Freeze By' dates of June 19 and 20, and distributed to stores after initial shipment to distributors in four states.
- FSIS advises cooking ground beef thoroughly until it reaches 160°F as confirmed by a food thermometer, highlighting that while no cases of illness have been reported, symptoms of E. Coli infection can include abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhea, and, in severe instances, hemolytic uremic syndrome, a form of kidney failure.
- Since the products are no longer sold but might remain in consumers' refrigerators, FSIS advises immediate disposal or return for refund to prevent serious health risks, especially to young children and older adults.
