Spain and the United Kingdom have agreed under EU mediation that the British exclave will in future be de facto integrated into the Schengen area.
The "final political agreement" signed on Wednesday 11 June provides that checks on arrivals and departures will be carried out by the Gilbraltarian and Spanish polices. A customs union should also be sealed between the EU and Gibraltar.
The future agreement with the United Kingdom provides for the elimination of the Fence, free movement of people, tax harmonization, environmental commitments on landfills and dumping, and a joint economic fund to reduce inequalities in the Campo de Gibraltar.
The pact incorporates the Rock into the Schengen area and eliminates physical border controls with Spain, although it does not resolve the sovereignty dispute.
The Spanish authorities will carry out passport controls at the port and airport of Gibraltar under the political agreement reached in Brussels between the United Kingdom and the European Union and which will entail the abolition of the gate, as recorded in the joint declaration.
