Govt 'alliance' to combat online scammers
NEW ZEALAND, JUL 10 – The New Zealand Anti-Scam Alliance unites banks, tech firms, and government agencies to share real-time data and prevent scams causing up to NZ$2 billion in annual losses, officials said.
- On 10 July 2025, Scott Simpson, the Minister responsible for Commerce and Consumer Affairs, introduced the NewZealand Anti-Scam Alliance, a nationwide initiative aimed at tackling online financial fraud.
- Simpson noted that New Zealand’s approach to combating scams had evolved without a clear structure, resulting in disjointed communication and delays in sharing information among different sectors.
- The Alliance establishes a formal structure including government agencies, banks, telcos, digital platforms, and consumer groups to share scam data and shut down scams in real time.
- Google launched Financial Services Verification last year in New Zealand using AI-driven scam detection, while banks pledged to update the Code of Banking Practice with new safeguards.
- The Alliance aims to enhance intersector collaboration, strengthen consumer protections, share information faster, and Simpson is considering legislative changes for proactive intelligence sharing.
