Government fast-tracks two new reservoirs to shore up water supply
- On May 31, 2025, the UK Government announced plans to expedite the development of two major new water storage facilities located in Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire to boost the region’s water supply.
- The fast-track designation responds to growing water shortages, infrastructure issues, and housing build delays caused by limited water availability and climate pressures.
- The reservoirs are planned to provide water for over 750,000 households, with the Fens Reservoir close to Chatteris slated for completion by 2036, and the Lincolnshire Reservoir, located south of Sleaford, expected to be operational by 2040.
- Water Minister Emma Hardy stated that the Government is cutting bureaucratic hurdles to accelerate approvals and enable the construction of nine new reservoirs, while experts highlight the urgent need for immediate action to secure water supplies.
- The intervention aims to ease planning, secure future water supplies, and unlock housing developments, though some experts and communities warn of opposition and call for more water-use reforms.
