Nurses, Home Care Clinicians Plan Large-Scale Strike in Boston
The union says the walkout will be the largest nurse and health care professional strike in Massachusetts history.
- On Wednesday, more than 4,000 nurses at Brigham and Women's Hospital will launch a one-day strike following a breakdown in contract negotiations with Mass General Brigham over wages and staffing.
- The Massachusetts Nurses Association claims nurses need cost-of-living increases after working without a contract since March 31, while MGB asserts nurses receive annual 5% step increases and rank within the top 10% of market compensation.
- Union leadership argues that 14 MGB executives received a combined $35.9 million in compensation during fiscal 2024, while MGB contends the across-the-board wage increases requested would cost the hospital $128 million over 18 months.
- Although the strike is scheduled for one day, MGB will enforce a four-day lockout because the system must employ nearly 1,300 temporary nurses for a minimum of five days total.
- Governor Maura Healey, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, and U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Edward J. Markey urged both sides to resume negotiations, as MGB Home Care clinicians also plan a seven-day strike.
