Good news for Asda shoppers as supermarket makes major change to 956 items
Asda reduces prices by an average of 6% on 956 grocery items to ease financial pressure on lower-income households facing a £74 weekly shortfall, the retailer said.
- Asda, Leeds-based supermarket, announced it is cutting prices on 956 products both in-store and online as part of its Asda Price plan.
- Asda framed the cuts as a response to falling sales, with take-home sales down 2.6% over 12 weeks to 10 August and Kantar reporting a 2.7% drop in three months to early September.
- Among the discounted items are Yorkshire Tea reduced from £6.32 to £5 and Asda Gravy Granules from £1 to 69p, with some deals adding to 3,452 Rollback deals.
- Asda says the reductions are intended to help lower-income households facing a weekly shortfall and is cutting prices on 49 'Free From' products by up to 15% at its supplier conference.
- Market data confirm Lidl’s £250m investment and Tesco boss Ken Murphy recently hinted at more price competition, while Asda’s revenues fell from £24.6 billion to just under £23.8 billion and it reported an £834 million loss.
