Gazans Hold Anti-Hamas Protests Across Strip
Organizers say the rallies target hunger, displacement and Hamas rule, while Hamas has arrested protesters and restricted gatherings at hospitals.
On Friday, June 26, 2026, Hamas operatives suppressed planned 'Day of Rage' protests across the Gaza Strip, using mass arrests and intimidation to prevent demonstrations against the group's rule.
Organizers, including the 'We Want to Live' movement, sought to channel public anger over poverty, corruption, and Hamas's control over life in Gaza. Ahed Al Hendi, a senior fellow at the Center for Peace Communications, described the movement as "a cry from ordinary Gazans."
Humanitarian activist Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib reported that hospitals across Gaza were turned into "makeshift police stations, interrogation sites, and torture centers." Hamas's al-Qassam brigades used threats and shoot-to-kill orders to disperse potential protesters at locations like Nasser Hospital.
Hamas and the Palestinian Council of Scholars condemned the protests as a "criminal movement," effectively clearing demonstration sites by Friday. Senior leader Khaled Meshaal urged that anger be directed toward "the crimes of the occupation" instead of fueling internal conflict.
Alkhatib condemned Western media silence on the suppressed 'June 26 Revolution,' noting that the campaign reflects deep-seated social currents against Hamas that have persisted for years despite the group's efforts to maintain control.
