Delhi Fuel Ban for End-of-Life Vehicles Delayed! New Rule to Kick in From Nov 1
DELHI AND NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION (NCR), INDIA, JUL 8 – The fuel ban targets diesel vehicles over 10 years and petrol vehicles over 15 years to reduce pollution, with about 62 lakh end-of-life vehicles in Delhi-NCR affected, officials said.
- The implementation of the fuel restriction targeting end-of-life vehicles in Delhi has been postponed until November 1, 2025, following a decision by the regulatory body overseeing air quality management.
- The deferral followed a July 3 written request from Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa citing operational and infrastructural challenges, including ANPR system glitches and lack of database integration.
- ANPR cameras connected to the VAHAN database have been installed at petrol pumps across Delhi, but problems such as malfunctioning sensors and suboptimal camera positioning have affected the system’s enforcement capabilities.
- Sirsa called immediate enforcement "premature and potentially counter-productive," noted public concerns, and highlighted that Delhi lacks an authorised vehicle scrapping centre, with some cars worth lakhs disappearing.
- The postponement provides additional time to complete infrastructure installations by October 31 and is intended to prevent cross-border fueling issues by implementing enforcement simultaneously across the capital region and five neighboring districts with high vehicle traffic starting November 1.
