DELHI AND NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION (NCR), INDIA, JUL 8 – The fuel ban targets diesel vehicles over 10 years and petrol vehicles over 15 years to reduce pollution, with about 62 lakh end-of-life vehicles in Delhi-NCR affected, officials said.
- The panel responsible for managing air quality in Delhi has postponed the ban on fueling end-of-life vehicles in the city and five neighboring districts, rescheduling its enforcement to November 1, 2025.
- The decision came after a formal letter was submitted on July 3 by the environment minister of Delhi, who highlighted concerns about the early rollout and practical difficulties of implementing the measures.
- Delhi’s fuel outlets have installed cameras that capture vehicle license plates and cross-check them with the VAHAN database, although issues like system malfunctions and inadequate coordination with neighbouring states continue to pose challenges.
- Sirsa described the deferral as a 'major relief' and noted CAQM's sensitivity after their request, while vehicles marked end-of-life can continue operating and refuelling until November 1.
- The delay allows authorities and the public more time to prepare for full enforcement of the fuel ban, planned to start November 1 in Delhi and later in other NCR districts.
