OpenAI Just Made Its Biggest Move Against Nvidia — and It Could Make ChatGPT Cheaper to Run
The chip is designed from the ground up for large language model workloads that power ChatGPT, Codex and the OpenAI API, OpenAI said.
- On Wednesday, OpenAI and Broadcom unveiled Jalapeño, an Intelligence Processor designed specifically for large language model inference powering ChatGPT and future products. "Chips are foundational to the AI economy," OpenAI said in a statement.
- Silicon Valley companies frequently utilize food-themed codenames for internal projects, a practice OpenAI continued with Jalapeño while also naming a new large language model "Garlic," according to The Information. Google released "Nano Banana Pro" on November 20, 2025.
- Richard, leader of OpenAI's hardware program, said "Based on early testing, Jalapeño will efficiently execute our most important workloads close to the hardware's theoretical limits." Early testing indicates performance per watt substantially exceeds current accelerators.
- Broadcom President and CEO Hock Tan stated the partnership enables "deployment of gigawatt-scale data centers with Microsoft and other partners beginning in 2026." The collaboration helps OpenAI "scale intelligence, serve more people, and expand access to AI."
- The hardware marks the first step in a multi-generation compute platform planned for deployment by the end of 2026. Broadcom shares were up 0.40% at $381.57 on Wednesday, with $370.50 established as key support.
