- FTII was established in 1960 and became recognized as the Film and Television Institute of India in 1971, serving as a department of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting before it gained its current status.
- Both institutes will now be able to award degrees, including doctoral programs, enhancing their academic offerings, as stated by a Ministry of Education official.
