From handball to hoops for this 7-foot-2 Michigan freshman

ANN ARBOR — Until the COVID pandemic, Malick Kordel was a team handball player in his native Germany. That’s what his friends played and Kordel enjoyed playing with them, scoring goals from his left wing position. When COVID led to serious restrictions of activities in 2021, Kordel put on some weight, surpassing 300 pounds. Seeking physical fitness, he turned to basketball, which, unlike handball, had outdoor courts.
