French language complaints and inspections surge in Quebec

  • This past year, enforcement activity by Quebec's office for the protection of the French language surged, carrying out close to 10,000 inspections to crack down on language law violations.
  • Between April 1, 2024 and March 31, 2025, the office recorded 9,813 inspections, a 47 per cent increase from 2022–2023.
  • The inspections were prompted by a record number of complaints alongside surveillance efforts carried out at the office's own initiative.
  • Over last April and this March, a total of 9,813 complaints were brought to the office, mainly about customers not being served in French and signage and website non-compliance.
  • The figures were revealed in the office's most recent annual report made public on Thursday, and this report by The Canadian Press was first published Oct. 12, 2025.
