Pope Leo XIV Appoints New Director of the Vatican Observatory
Vatican Media Pope Leo XIV visits the historic telescopes located at the Vatican Observatory in Castel Gandolfo, 15 miles southeast of Rome, on July 20, 2025. Astronomer Jesuit Father Richard Anthony D’Souza succeeds Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno, whose 10-year mandate ends next month. Consolmagno will remain at the scientific institution as a staff astronomer.
Leo XIV appointed him as the new director of the Vatican Observatory. Scholar of the origins of the galaxies grew up in India fascinated by Matteo Ricci. He studied physics in Mumbai, before specializing in Germany and the United States. Pope Leo XIV has appointed Indian Jesuit Father Richard Anthony D'Souza as the new director of the Vatican Astronomical Observatory. The announcement was made at the Vatican on July 31. D'Souza will take over the role on September 19 from American Jesuit Brother Guy Consolmagno, who has directed the observatory since 2015.
