Former Tamil Nadu CM O. Panneerselvam likely to join DMK today
O. Panneerselvam plans to resign as MLA and join DMK amid electoral strategy, citing DMK's strong chance to retain power, sources said on Friday morning.
- On Friday, O. Panneerselvam called on Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and said the DMK stood a chance of retaining power, after expected resignation from his MLA post around 9 am.
- Facing expulsion and intra-party rifts, O. Panneerselvam remained persona non grata with AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and was expelled, while he broke with the BJP after it allied with AIADMK, leaving him outside the NDA.
- Party sources say the DMK has assured tickets to O. Panneerselvam and key supporters in Theni district, while the first signal emerged last week when P Ayyappan praised Stalin on the Assembly floor.
- The crossover would be one of the most striking developments, as for OPS it is a matter of life and death in electoral politics, despite AIADMK supporters' resistance, according to a top source.
- About seven months ago the two had met during M.K. Stalin's morning walk at the Theosophical Society in Adyar and later at his residence in Alwarpet, while O. Panneerselvam interacted with the DMK president twice in 12 hours, highlighting the dramatic reversal.
