Former Kwara governor, Cornelius Adebayo is dead

  • Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, who previously served as a senator, governor of Kwara State, and Minister of Communications, passed away in Abuja at 84 years old on Wednesday morning.
  • He began his political journey in 1975 as Kwara State Commissioner for Education and later secured a Senate seat in 1979 representing the Unity Party of Nigeria during the country’s Second Republic.
  • Adebayo briefly governed Kwara State in 1983 until the military takeover that ended the Second Republic, and he later became part of NADECO, opposing the invalidation of the presidential vote held on June 12, 1993.
  • In 1995, following a bomb explosion in Ilorin, Adebayo and fellow members of NADECO were detained and interrogated by authorities, and mounting military persecution led him to briefly seek refuge in Canada the next year.
  • He held the position of Nigeria’s Minister of Communications between 2003 and 2006, and his death led to tributes that honored him as a committed public servant and devoted patriot.
