The former mayor of Kherson, Volodymyr Mykolayenko, was freed from Russian captivity on Sunday after more than three years. He was among several others released in a prisoner swap on Ukraine's Independence Day. The former leader of Kherson said many young people had struggled in captivity, with some committing suicide.
According to the footage, Volodymyr Mykolayenko has lost a lot of weight and his hair has been shaved.
Volodymyr Mykolaenko was kidnapped by the Russians in April 2022. Although he could have been released earlier in a prisoner exchange, he sent a seriously ill Ukrainian soldier home in his place.
Almost all the independent defenders were held captive for more than three years.
