Kenya’s former chief justice David Maraga arrested during park construction protest
Police arrested Maraga and several activists as hundreds protested a plan to build on 76 acres inside the park.
On Monday, police arrested Former Chief Justice David Maraga during a protest against planned infrastructure construction at Nairobi National Park.
The planned excision of 76 acres of protected land prompted activists to oppose the Kenya Wildlife Service, which defends the construction as orphanage expansion.
Hundreds of demonstrators gathered to defend the park, with Amnesty International Kenya stating, "We want to categorically state that Nairobi National Park is not for sale."
Maraga was detained and later released while staging a sit-in outside the park's main gate, though he sought to present a petition to the Kenya Wildlife Service.
Environmentalists warn that continued land excisions could negatively affect biodiversity and tourism, as Kenya has a history of encroachment on protected green spaces.
