Wadephul Says Berlin Should Prevent Israel's International Isolation
GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE, AUG 1 – German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul demands Israel allow immediate humanitarian aid to Gaza's two million residents amid a worsening famine and mounting diplomatic isolation, officials said.
- Thursday, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met in Jerusalem with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, demanding aid be enabled into Gaza "immediately, comprehensively and in a lasting way."
- Last week, a majority of Israeli lawmakers urged annexation of the West Bank, while Berlin repeatedly opposed such moves and called for a Gaza ceasefire.
- Wadephul said Thursday that UN-backed experts reported 'famine is now unfolding' in Gaza, highlighting the severity of the crisis.
- Wadephul warned that Israel must "quickly and safely send sufficient humanitarian and medical aid to avoid mass deaths," calling daily civilian casualties "absolutely intolerable" and demanding "clarity from Israel that there is no policy of expulsion, no policy of annexation."
- Looking ahead, Johann Wadephul said, 'We see recognising a Palestinian state at the end of a process of a negotiation, a process that must, however, begin soon,' as Canada, France, and Britain plan recognition.
