Florida Schedules Executions of 80-Year-Old and Other Elderly Inmates
The series would make Sochor the state’s oldest execution and could make Occhicone the nation’s second-oldest, officials said.
On Tuesday, July 14, 2026, Florida is scheduled to execute 74-year-old inmate Dennis Michael Sochor at Florida State Prison, with spiritual advisor Rev. Jeff Hood stating Sochor requested Governor Ron DeSantis attend.
Sochor's death sentence stems from the 1981 murder of 18-year-old Patricia Gifford, whom he strangled after meeting her at a Broward County bar on New Year's Eve.
Attorneys for Sochor unsuccessfully challenged Florida's lethal injection protocol, citing autopsy records for 33 executed inmates that allegedly showed "severe air hunger" akin to drowning before the Florida Supreme Court denied his final appeals.
If carried out, this execution marks the 10th in Florida this year under Governor DeSantis's accelerated warrant schedule, with the state executing more inmates than all other U.S. states combined.
Sochor, 74, would become the oldest inmate executed in Florida history, surpassing the previous record of 72, as the state prepares to execute an 80-year-old prisoner later this month.
