JAPAN, AUG 7 – Leaders and faith groups called for nuclear disarmament and peace during the 80th Hiroshima anniversary, noting up to 250,000 deaths from the bombings, organizers said.
- On Wednesday, Turkish parliament speaker Numan Kurtulmus commemorated the 80th anniversary of Hiroshima, stating that those killed were not only Japanese but all of humanity.
- Global churches and communities deepened calls for peace and a nuclear weapons-free world, with Catholic bishops joining a pilgrimage coordinated by the Partnership for a World Without Nuclear Weapons.
- On August 5, Catholic bishops from Japan, South Korea and the US and hibakusha held a panel discussion at the World Peace Memorial Cathedral in Hiroshima, followed by a 75-hour vigil from August 6-9.
- Approximately 55,000 people attended, representing 120 nations and regions, while Russia had no representation at the Hiroshima observance.
- Amid deepening nuclear standoffs, Ishiba said, "The widening of the division within the international community over approaches to nuclear disarmament has made the current security environment even more challenging," emphasizing the need for disarmament under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

On the 80th anniversary of the August 1945 atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, churches and communities across the world deepened their calls for peace and for a nuclear weapons-free world. An estimated 150,000 to 250,000 people died in the bombings of the two Japanese cities. Many of the deaths were instantaneous, while others died years later due to the radiation.
