Children Arrested in South West Murder Probe After House Fire
Five youths have been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after a fire displaced 45 residents and prompted a murder investigation, police said.
- On Tuesday evening , a blaze tore through a two-storey terraced house on Honestone Street, Bideford, with 15 fire crews hosing down the fire as the roof collapsed.
- Detective Inspector Chris Lithgow said Devon and Cornwall Police arrested five people in custody: four boys and a girl, all under 18 from North Devon, on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.
- Around 45 neighbouring residents were evacuated, about 30 placed in temporary housing or hotels in Bideford and Barnstaple, while South West Forensics and a scene guard remained as next of kin were informed.
- Torridge District Council said it is supporting displaced residents and anyone needing help should call 01237 428700, while police urge the public to provide information via 101 and log 748 of 28 October.
- Police described the probe as challenging, with Devon and Cornwall Police linking a large power outage and road closure in place most of the day to the incident.
