'Game-changing' HIV prevention jab to be approved for use in England and Wales

The NHS will offer cabotegravir injections every two months for about 1,000 people unable to take oral HIV prevention pills, aiming to help end HIV transmissions by 2030.

  • The NHS in England and Wales will offer patients an injection to prevent HIV as an alternative to daily pills.
  • The long-acting shot is given six times a year or every other month to reduce the risk of getting HIV.
  • The jab will be considered for adults and adolescents at high risk of sexually acquired HIV and for whom taking oral tablets would be difficult.
