First ever compensation scheme launched for postmasters affected by Capture IT scandal

The scheme offers up to £300,000 in compensation following a 2024 investigation into faulty accounting software that caused financial harm to former postmasters.

  • The Department for Business and Trade launched the first ever Capture Redress Scheme for former sub postmasters, with applications open via GOV.UK as the government acknowledged 1990s damage.
  • An independent investigation found in September 2024 by Kroll Associates a `reasonable likelihood` that the Capture IT system caused accounting shortfalls, forcing affected postmasters to cover losses.
  • Payments will range up to £300,000 with an independent assessment panel using a payment banding of £10,000 to £300,000, and eligible claimants can get an interim payment of £10,000.
  • Post Office Minister Blair McDougall said `after over two decades of fighting for justice, postmasters and their families will finally receive recognition and recompense for the lives and livelihoods that Capture destroyed.`
  • The rollout will begin with an initial test group of 150 claimants before full implementation; it excludes those with Capture-related convictions under review by the Criminal Cases Review Commission, and ministers thanked victims for helping design the scheme.
