FEMA extends housing aid for Maui wildfire survivors until 2027
Nearly 1,000 displaced households benefit from extended FEMA aid due to severe housing shortages and limited rental availability, officials said.
- Hawaii Gov. Josh Green said U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem approved extending Federal Emergency Management Agency temporary housing assistance until February 2027.
- The fires in Lahaina and Kula destroyed 2,200 structures and killed 102 people, and with few homes rebuilt and rental inventory nearing zero, the State of Hawaii requested another extension in May.
- FEMA, the state, county and nonprofits scrambled to house about 8,000 residents in hotels and temporary shelters, offering rent payments and leased units despite some complaints about eligibility and moves.
- Nearly 1,000 households will keep federal assistance, preserving aid for 12,000 displaced people, 89% renters, after Then-President Joe Biden's disaster declaration and extension through February 2026.
