Feds warn: Hang up on phone scammers pretending to be border patrol agents
- The Houston division of the federal agency responsible for border security alerted the public on Tuesday about phone scams in which callers impersonate officers to trick individuals into revealing personal information.
- Scammers claim CBP intercepted drug shipments addressed to targets and pressure victims to cooperate by providing sensitive data, threatening police action if ignored.
- These scammers impersonate Customs and Border Protection officers by using actual names and contact information of CBP personnel that are publicly accessible, along with fabricated case and badge numbers, and they alter caller ID details to seem authentic.
- Rod Hudson, Acting Director of CBP Houston, emphasized that CBP does not contact individuals by phone to intimidate them with claims that authorities are en route, nor does it offer money in exchange for information.
- Authorities recommend that individuals end calls from anyone falsely claiming to represent CBP, confirm legitimacy through official agency websites, and report fraudulent calls through the Federal Trade Commission’s complaint portal.
