Family of schoolgirl sexually assaulted by wrongly released migrant 'infuriated' by ordeal

Hadush Kebatu was at large for over 70 hours after a prison error, prompting an independent inquiry and plans for his deportation, Justice Secretary David Lammy said.

  • On Friday, Hadush Kebatu, a convicted sex offender migrant, was accidentally released from prison and spent more than 70 hours at large before his Sunday morning arrest in Finsbury Park, London.
  • Footage and interviews indicate procedural confusion when prison staff guided a confused Kebatu toward the railway station at HMP Chelmsford, and he returned four or five times to reception before leaving.
  • Mr Lammy said he will make a statement in Parliament on Monday and that `I saw the Sky reporting from yesterday and of course, that will be subject to the independent inquiry that must now take place.`
  • Police say they will question Kebatu to learn his movements between his accidental release on Friday and his arrest, while the incident has sparked questions and protests in Epping and David Lammy called the release "totally unacceptable".
  • Officials say Kebatu will be deported back to Ethiopia this coming week, while Tom Parmenter, Sky's national correspondent, highlighted a delivery driver’s interview about Kebatu at HMP Chelmsford.
