Evert went into hiding in the Achterhoek 80 years ago as a little boy: 'The way the people of Aalten welcomed us is unforgettable'

On the back of his mother's bike - more than 180 kilometers through icy cold - little Evert from Scheveningen arrived at the Deunk-Meinen farming family in 1943. From the salty sea air to the smell of manure and hay. It was a moment in the life of the Scheveninger that never left him. More than eighty years later, he presents the book Scheveningse Evacuees in Aalten. It is the result of sixty years of research that he did as an amateur historian.
