EV Prices to Match that of Petrol Vehicles in 4-6 Months: Gadkari

GST reforms and government initiatives are driving a price parity between electric and petrol vehicles, reducing India's annual Rs 22 lakh crore fuel import bill, according to Minister Gadkari.

  • At the 20th FICCI Higher Education Summit 2025 on Monday, Nitin Gadkari said EV prices in India will match petrol-car prices within 4-6 months.
  • Faced with Rs 22 lakh crore in annual fuel imports, Gadkari said GST 2.0 reform and GST council cuts lowered car taxes, reducing prices in recent months.
  • Alongside EV targets, Gadkari said `A budgetary allocation of Rs 500 crore has been sanctioned to five consortia across ten routes, with 37 vehicles participating` during pilot programmes supported by hydrogen refuelling stations and India's first 'hydrogen highways' last month.
  • Gadkari noted the industry's growth from Rs 14 lakh crore to Rs 22 lakh crore, and said India is now the world's third-largest auto industry behind the United States and China.
  • Gadkari said the government aims within five years to make India's automobile industry the number one in the world and plans a segregated solid waste reuse programme alongside higher education institutions and skill development initiatives.
