In order to close a billion holes in the statutory health insurance companies, politicians are calling for an increase in tobacco tax.
Politicians of the government coalition can imagine an increase in the tobacco tax – and thus have a positive response from family doctors. Meanwhile, Green health politician Janosh Dahmen calls for sugar and alcohol to be taken into consideration.
Around 17 billion euros of tobacco tax are collected every year – also to compensate for illness costs. Union and SPD politicians now want a tax increase. Is that sensible? An advisor to the Ministry of Finance comes to a surprising conclusion.
The cost of smoking is high: not only for smokers, but also for the health care system and the economy. Politicians from the Union and SPD therefore make a proposal to kill several birds with one stone.
