EU governments adopt legislation to fulfil EU side of US trade deal
The regulations remove EU tariffs on U.S. industrial goods and extend lobster duty suspensions, while adding safeguards against import surges.
EU member states approved legislation to implement a one-year-old tariff deal with the United States, allowing it to take effect before the July 4 deadline set by President Donald Trump.
The deal imposes 15% tariffs on most EU exports to the United States and eliminates tariffs on U.S. industrial goods entering the 27-nation EU bloc.
EU lawmakers introduced safeguards including powers to suspend the agreement if the United States fails to meet its commitments, and set the deal to expire at the end of 2029 unless renewed.
European Commerce Minister Michael Damianos emphasized that the agreement aims to secure stable and balanced transatlantic trade while protecting EU economic interests, allowing swift response if the deal is violated.
