EU and Indonesia Announce 'Political Agreement' on Trade Deal
INDONESIA, JUL 13 – The deal is expected to reduce tariffs on about 80% of Indonesian exports, boosting trade and investment while promoting sustainable growth and strategic cooperation, officials said.
- On Sunday in Brussels, the president of the European Commission and Indonesia’s leader announced a political accord aimed at moving forward with a much-anticipated free trade agreement.
- The agreement comes after nearly ten years of discussions within the framework of the Indonesia-European Union trade negotiations, occurring amid a backdrop of global trade challenges and uncertainty.
- The IEU-CEPA encompasses cooperation across 21 sectors such as the exchange of goods and services, investment opportunities, customs management, digital commerce, and sustainable development, with the goal of reducing tariffs and other obstacles.
- Airlangga Hartarto said from Brussels, “all issues have now been resolved” and called the deal “a milestone” enabling Indonesian products to enter Europe at zero tariffs, while von der Leyen noted this step opens new markets.
- The agreement aims to enhance bilateral trade, currently valued at $30.1 billion, generate employment opportunities, and support objectives related to sustainable development, with the final signing scheduled for later this year in Jakarta.
