Short sick leave accounts for the majority of absences among municipal employees. Monday is clearly the most common day for sick leave to begin, and absences that begin on Monday cause up to double the costs compared to other weekdays, according to a recent study by the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy (Etla). A key probable explanation for early week absences is illness periods that began at the weekend.
