Ethanol Factory Fury: Farmers and Leaders Demand Justice in Rajasthan
Protests over a Rs 450 crore ethanol plant in Hanumangarh have led to violent clashes, injuring over 70 people and prompting police to detain 40 farmers, officials said.
- On Wednesday , hundreds of farmers stormed Dune Ethanol Pvt Ltd in Rathikheda, breaking the boundary wall and setting fire to the office and several vehicles during a nearly 5,000-strong mahapanchayat.
- Longstanding grievances over environmental harms have driven local farmers and resident groups to oppose the plant for over a year, citing air pollution, water toxicity, and demanding fresh clearances and consent.
- Arson and vandalism followed police interventions as protesters torched more than a dozen vehicles including a police jeep and private cars, while authorities booked more than 107 farmers and took forty into custody amid nearly 500 security personnel deployed.
- Displacement and makeshift sheltering followed the violence, with internet suspension in Tibbi and nearby villages, local institutions ordered closed, around 30 families displaced, over 100 farmers at Gurdwara Singh Sabha, and a scheduled farmers' meeting at noon with talks expected.
- The administration and developer defend the project's approvals, stating Hanumangarh Collector Dr. Khushal Yadav confirmed all clearances at the Rising Rajasthan summit 2022 while Dune Ethanol Pvt Ltd supports the Centre's EBP programme amid demands for relocation or fresh clearances to protect farmers' livelihoods.
