Eighty years after the war, it is estimated that there are still about 1,900 tons of unexploded bombs buried in Okinawa. Even if the average amount of bombs to be cleared per year remains at 20 tons, it is expected to take nearly another 100 years to clear them all. During the Asia-Pacific War, the U.S. military dropped 160,000 tons of bombs on parts of Japan other than Okinawa.
