Escalating Israeli strikes kill five people in Gaza, medics say
ACLED said air and drone strikes topped 40 in June, the highest monthly total since the October ceasefire.
On Thursday, Israeli strikes killed at least five Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, with a U.S.-based research group reporting attack levels not seen since the October ceasefire took effect.
ACLED data shows air and drone strikes surged to more than 40 in June, the highest monthly total since the ceasefire. ACLED Middle East Assistant Research Manager Nasser Khdour attributed the surge to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu facing domestic pressure to adopt a tougher security position.
Medics reported that an airstrike killed two people near Tuffah, while tank shelling killed one in Zeitoun. Additional strikes in western Gaza City and Khan Younis killed two more, bringing Thursday's total to five.
The recent deaths add to a toll of more than 1,100 Palestinians killed since the October ceasefire, while the broader offensive has killed more than 73,000. Four Israeli soldiers have been killed by militants during the same period.
Despite the ceasefire halting major fighting, nearly 2 million people remain in Gaza living in makeshift tents or damaged buildings under Hamas control, as near-daily Israeli strikes continue unabated.
