Man Fleeing ICE Officers in Florida Is Struck and Killed by Tractor Trailer, Police Say
Florida Highway Patrol said the man fled federal agents, then ran into a tractor-trailer’s path as four vehicle occupants escaped.
On Tuesday, a 28-year-old man died near State Road 16 and Green Acres Road in St. Augustine, Florida, after running into the path of a tractor trailer while fleeing an encounter with Homeland Security Investigations and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
Four occupants of a vehicle fled a gas station parking lot during the encounter, Florida Highway Patrol said. One person ran "across State Road 16 and into the path of the tractor trailer," while the 64-year-old truck driver "immediately stopped and attempted to render aid to the victim."
Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the traffic fatality, though officials confirmed they were not involved in the initial encounter. Neither Immigration and Customs Enforcement nor the Department of Homeland Security has commented on the incident.
This death marks the third fatal encounter with Immigration and Customs Enforcement in about a week, following shootings in Maine involving Joan Sebastian Guerrero and in Houston involving Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. Officials indicated neither victim was the person agents were targeting.
The Trump administration ordered Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to pause most traffic stops on Tuesday, following mounting scrutiny over the agency's operational tactics and the series of fatal encounters across the country.
