UK Government Unveils Roadmap for Employment Law Changes
- Today, the UK Government released a timeline outlining the phased introduction of important workplace reforms set to take effect in 2026 and 2027.
- The roadmap, shaped by over 190 consultations with businesses and stakeholders throughout the past year, is designed to provide clear guidance for employees while allowing employers sufficient time to adapt.
- Key initiatives include expanding access to statutory sick pay by eliminating eligibility earnings thresholds and the initial waiting period, providing parental and paternity leave from an employee’s first day, banning fire and rehire tactics, and enhancing employer responsibilities to prevent workplace harassment.
- Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds stated that the roadmap offers companies the clear guidance necessary to effectively prepare and expand, while CIPD chief Peter Cheese described it as the most significant workplace reform agenda seen in decades.
- These reforms are designed to enhance the rights and safeguards for approximately 15 million employees, with additional consultations scheduled to take place from this year through the next, allowing for a gradual rollout of the measures.
