Elon Musk says he wants to merge Tesla, SpaceX
The tie-up could create a $3.5 trillion company and give Musk access to Tesla cash for SpaceX’s heavy AI spending, analysts said.
On Tuesday, October 20, Elon Musk revealed that SpaceX and Tesla established special committees to explore a potential merger, saying the idea has "lot of merit."
Integrating the two businesses could coordinate AI computing, chip development, and robotics across complementary operations; Musk cited cooperation opportunities in "superintelligence software, chip design, the Terafab obviously, robotics, mass-to-orbit with the Starmind constellation, connectivity."
Valued at about $3.5 trillion, a combined entity would rank among the world's largest companies. Jerayr Haleblian, merger expert at the University of California, Riverside, said the proposal has "sound logic" to support it.
Governance remains a major hurdle because Musk leads both companies; he stated he cannot participate in committee deliberations as a "conflicted party," and any deal requires a 50 percent vote among Tesla shareholders.
While SpaceX shares rose more than 8 percent following the announcement, Musk cautioned against certainty, stating "there's no guarantee that they will" reach agreement and that assuming a merger is inevitable "would be overstating it.
Elon Musk is pushing for the creation of a new trillion-dollar company with a market capitalization that would exceed the value of companies on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. Chief Strategist Valtteri Ahti assesses the likelihood of the merger and the potential winners and losers.
