EASA Instructs Airlines to Avoid Gulf Airspace
The advisory covers Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and the Gulf of Oman as missile and drone activity raises civil aviation risks.
- The European Union Aviation Safety Agency issued a new Conflict Zone Information Bulletin on Tuesday advising airlines to avoid airspace over Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE, and the Muscat Flight Information Region west of 58 degrees east longitude.
- Renewed US-Iran fighting prompted the warning, as Iran fired ballistic missiles at a U.S. air base in Jordan on Saturday and threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz. President Donald Trump responded by proposing a 20% fee to guard the waterway.
- EASA stated, "The presence of major US military facilities in the region increases the likelihood that the states covered by this Conflict Zone Information Bulletin may be directly exposed to Iranian missile and drone attacks." The agency also warned that air defense systems could misidentify civil aircraft.
- Airlines including Lufthansa, British Airways, and Cathay Pacific suspended operations to the UAE. Separately, Israel extended its ban on flights to Dubai until the end of October.
- Separate EASA bulletins for Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon remain in effect through August 31, while the new advisory stays valid through July 29. Passengers should check flight status frequently before arriving at the airport, as route changes may cause delays.
