'If Not in Delhi, Then Where?' : Omar Abdullah Announces Statehood Protest on July 20
Omar Abdullah said the campaign will expand if the Centre does not restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, with protests planned in Delhi and across the Union territory.
On Saturday, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced an intensified political campaign beginning with a protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on July 20 to demand restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood.
The Chief Minister accused the Centre of reneging on commitments made before the Supreme Court to restore statehood following delimitation and assembly elections.
Omar alleged the BJP attempted to persuade National Conference legislators to switch allegiance, claiming some were offered between Rs 20 crore and Rs 30 crore to support the party.
Describing statehood as a 'common cause,' the Chief Minister invited leaders from all political parties to join the July 20 protest, arguing the issue transcends political affiliations.
Comparing the region to Ladakh, which received constitutional safeguards, Omar questioned why Jammu and Kashmir remains denied statehood despite the Centre's promise that Article 370's removal would create one unified system.
