I will admit I was late to the party on both so I may conflate the influence in the wrong direction but I will admit that I didn't hear much hype around Dr. Doom the villain until my return to comics for Civil War in 2007. I asked the same question about Tony Stark /Ironman / Ghostface Killah and my answer was he helped keep the name alive during the dark times at Marvel that's why he's in the movie (Iron Man 2008) ????
