Victorian Government Scales Back Energy Overhaul
CITY OF SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA, JUN 24 – New rules require all-electric appliances in new homes and commercial buildings to reduce emissions and save up to $626 annually on energy bills, city officials said.
The City of Sydney has voted to ban gas appliances in new homes starting January 1, 2026, requiring electric options instead, according to the council's decision.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore stated that moving away from gas will benefit health and finances, saying, "Relying on fossil fuel gas is bad for the planet, bad for our finances, and bad for our health."
Households in Sydney could save an average of $626 annually on energy bills under the new electric-only requirements, as reported by climate group 350 Australia.
Medical professionals support the decision, mentioning that indoor gas use can contribute to respiratory issues, according to Shaun Watson from Doctors for the Environment Australia.
