'I was, and will remain an Indian': Dhruv Rathee shows passport after release, calls claims of foreign citizenship ‘false’
On Sunday, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee posted a video alleging he was "kidnapped" from his Gurugram residence in Sector 56 on Saturday morning without a warrant, legal access, or information about his destination.
The detention occurred amid Saturday protests demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with Rathee alleging more than 50 people in civilian clothes gathered outside his home without police uniforms or identification.
"They dragged me out of my bedroom," Rathee said, claiming he was held for around 22 to 23 hours while officials denied him legal counsel and seized his family's phones.
Countering citizenship allegations, Rathee displayed his passport, declaring, "I am an Indian citizen. I was, and I will remain one," and dismissed reports from what he called "Godi media."
Rathee accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of turning India into a dictatorship, citing Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini as examples of authoritarian leaders who met poor ends, and claimed more than 7,000 people have been detained.
