Detained immigrants at ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ say there are worms in food and wastewater on the floor
FLORIDA EVERGLADES, JUL 14 – Detainees at the Florida Everglades facility report maggot-infested food, 24/7 bright lights, and denied medical care while officials block unannounced oversight visits, raising human rights concerns.
- Leamsy Izquierdo, a Cuban artist detained since Friday, reported poor conditions at Alligator Alcatraz in the Florida Everglades, including lack of showers and worms in food.
- The facility opened about a week ago after a rapid setup on an airstrip seized by Governor DeSantis to aid deportations, while lawmakers were denied inspection citing safety concerns.
- Detained individuals say they get only one meal a day, have limited hygiene access, and endure overcrowded cells with 32 men each, while water is delivered in buckets due to plumbing issues.
- Mayor Daniella Levine Cava called for federal reports on ICE custody deaths amid allegations of poor conditions and a reported death at nearby Krome Detention Center in late June.
- Despite state officials denying deaths or emergencies at Alligator Alcatraz and minimizing issues, public and political scrutiny persists over transparency and detainee safety at the facility.
