Delhi's Air Quality Nears 'Severe' Mark, Thick Smog Lowers Visibility

Several Delhi areas recorded AQI above 400 due to smoke and fog, with visibility reduced and readings rising sharply from 218 to 377 in one day, officials said.

  • On Sunday morning, Delhi's air quality slipped into the `very poor` category with AQI of 377 at 7 am, according to the SAMEER app, up from 233 on Saturday.
  • The India Meteorological Department reported shallow fog and smoke reduced visibility across Delhi, while winter factors like stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana and emissions worsened air quality.
  • In Wazirpur, the highest AQI was 432, while 15 monitoring stations including Burari, Chandni Chowk, Dwarka Sector-8, Mundka, and Pusa recorded severe levels above 400.
  • The Air Quality Early Warning System forecast pollution will remain very poor until at least Tuesday, prompting authorities to enforce Stage 2 restrictions and a commercial goods vehicles ban, warning harm to healthy people.
  • The Delhi government attempted cloud seeding earlier this week, spending Rs 34 crore, but IIT Kanpur Director Manindra Agrawal said low moisture made induced rain unlikely despite a 6%-10% pollution drop at 15 monitoring stations.
