'I was, and will remain an Indian': Dhruv Rathee shows passport after release, calls claims of foreign citizenship ‘false’

Rathee said he was held for nearly 24 hours and denied a lawyer, while police and media claims about his citizenship were false.

  • On Saturday, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee was removed from his Gurugram residence by around 20 people in civilian clothes without a warrant or police uniform, an incident he described as a "kidnapping."
  • The detention occurred amid a major security operation in Delhi targeting the Cockroach Janta Party's proposed protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at Jantar Mantar, during which police detained more than 7,000 protesters.
  • Rathee alleged he was held for around 22 hours without lawyer access, had his phone seized, and claimed he was "dragged out of my bedroom" and injured during the incident.
  • Following his release, Rathee posted a video on Sunday displaying his passport and stating, "I am an Indian citizen. I was, and I will remain one," rejecting claims that foreign citizenship prompted his detention.
  • Rathee described the situation as an "unofficial emergency" and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of turning India into a dictatorship, warning, "If this thing can happen to me, then it can happen to you.
