D.C. groups sue over Trump’s planned ‘Garden of American Heroes’
On Monday, the National Parks Conservation Association and other groups sued the Trump administration, alleging the proposed "National Garden of American Heroes" in West Potomac Park is "unlawful" and would reduce recreational use of the park.
Congress has decreed that no new "commemorative work" shall occupy the National Mall's cross-axis, with the filing arguing the site is a "substantially completed work of civic art" rather than a "personal sandbox" for presidents to renovate.
President Donald Trump envisions a "magnificent exhibition" of 250 life-sized statues for America's 250th anniversary, describing the site as "Prime Waterfront Real Estate" along the Mighty Potomac River.
Dismissing the lawsuit, Interior Department spokesperson Katie Martin suggested critics suffer from "Trump Derangement Syndrome," while plaintiffs cited concerns about administration projects like the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which recently required algae maintenance.
The lawsuit highlights controversial renovations to other Washington landmarks, including the White House East Wing and Kennedy Center, as preservation groups seek to protect spaces deemed "some of the most visited and symbolically significant public spaces.
