12-Year-Old Girl Riding Motorized Scooter Dies After Collision with School Bus in Haverhill, DA Says
Police said both children were taken to hospitals, and the crash remains under investigation by state police and the medical examiner.
On Thursday, a 12-year-old girl died after colliding with a school bus while riding a motorized scooter at the intersection of Portland Street and 5th Avenue in Haverhill, Massachusetts, around 4 p.m.
Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker and Haverhill Police Chief Wayne Tracy confirmed the collision remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
A second child involved in the crash has been released from the hospital, while witness Nic Mello described seeing the pair struggle with a "speed wobble" before they "smashed right into" the bus.
Haverhill Public Schools Superintendent Margaret Marotta expressed condolences for the "heartbreaking tragedy," announcing that counseling services are available at J.G. Whittier Middle School on Friday and Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Marotta warned that unregulated motorized scooters pose "very real dangers" to young operators, while lawmakers urged passage of The Governor's bill to establish consistent safety guidelines for these vehicles.
