UNDP Reports Massive Impact as Cyclone Ditwah Floods 20% of Sri Lanka’s Land

Cyclone Ditwah flooded 20% of Sri Lanka, affecting 2.3 million people and 720,000 buildings, including 243 hospitals, raising risks of prolonged socioeconomic distress, UNDP said.

  • On December 10, the United Nations Development Programme reported Cyclone Ditwah submerged 1.1 million hectares, roughly 20 per cent of Sri Lanka's land mass, and exposed 2.3 million people to flooding after making landfall on November 28.
  • UNDP's integrated analysis shows Cyclone Ditwah caused intense rainfall and over 1,200 landslides in central highlands, with over half of affected households already facing multiple vulnerabilities.
  • The assessment found nearly 720,000 buildings were exposed to flooding, including 243 hospitals, and more than 16,000 km of roads, 278 km of railways, over 480 road bridges and 35 rail bridges.
  • UNDP warned damage to essential infrastructure complicates recovery and urged prioritizing debris clearance, community infrastructure rehabilitation, livelihood support and restoration of documentation.
  • Estimates show Cyclone Ditwah's recovery could cost up to $7 b, about 5% of Sri Lanka's GDP, and the United Nations Development Programme cautioned damaged infrastructure may prolong hardship.
