The roads to and from the port of IJmuiden were a traffic jam on Tuesday: kilometers of traffic jams, stuck cars, sighing cyclists, and the occasional scuffle. But once you reach the quay, you quickly forget all that: tall ships of all shapes and sizes are waiting to show their splendor during PreSail, the prelude to Sail Amsterdam.
Today marks the start of SAIL in Amsterdam: historic ships from around the world will sail into the capital. The preview event, PreSail, has already attracted around 70,000 visitors in IJmuiden and Beverwijk over the past few days. That was more than expected.
Several thousand people are out and about on the quays in IJmuiden to watch the ships participating in SAIL in Amsterdam. According to a spokesperson for PreSail IJmond, the event preceding the nautical spectacle, boats are arriving one after the other and it's "really busy." He expects the number of visitors to rise to tens of thousands later in the day.
